Library Assistant, Children's Services

We are seeking an outgoing, enthusiastic and energetic team player with a passion for working with children and families.  

Duties and Responsibilities

Plans, organizes, presents and evaluates theme and age-based library programs for children.

Delivers age-appropriate reference and reader’s advisory services to children and parents.

Provides library orientation to patrons, which includes conducting grade-specific story and instructional tours for school classes, daycares and other groups.

Works collaboratively with, and assists in the provision of outreach to schools and other community groups, to advocate for the library, and further the library’s goals around literacy, life-long learning and community building.

Assists with library technology including the library catalogue, public Internet workstations, mobile devices and the library’s many online resources.

Assists in the selection and promotion of children's library materials

Qualifications

Masters degree in Library/Information Studies or Library Technician training and appropriate experience

Library experience, preferably in a public library setting and with children

Experience in creating and delivering age-appropriate children’s programming.

Specialized knowledge of child development and of theories and models related to early and family literacy.

Strong knowledge of children’s literature.

Ability to work effectively outside of traditional library activities and settings. 

Excellent computer and technology skills.

Strong customer service orientation with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

French language fluency is an asset.

Terms of employment:

This is a temporary, part-time position (18 hrs/week) to start April 2019.  This position involves predominantly office hours Monday to Friday, but does include some evenings and weekends.

Salary Band:  $59,831 - $72,793 annually ($31.96/hr – $38.39/hr).

Summer Reading Programmers

Applicants should be a post-secondary student and enjoy working with children. This position involves creating and promoting our reading program, supervising and mentoring children and teens and presenting programs for 6-12 year olds and pre-schoolers. 

Positions are temporary, Full-time and run May 6- August 23, 2019 OR June 10- August 23, 2019

Wage: $18.04 per hour
