Role of the Poet Laureate

The Poet Laureate is an honorary position with a term of two years. The Poet Laureate is a literary ambassador who champions poetry, language, and the arts. They also represent the city as Laureate during readings at civic functions and public poetry events.

November's Poet Laureate Project

This November, St. Albertans are invited to watch out for poetry popping up in public spaces all around the city. Throughout the month, St. Albert Poet Laureate Julia Sorensen will be sharing segments of her poem, eight realisations from a visit with old friends in fall 2021, on interior advertising spaces on St. Albert Transit, on window clings at St. Albert Place and at Jensen Lakes Library, on bookmarks available at both Library locations, and online, with videos appearing on Instagram stories.

The piece reflects on the power of friendship and community in the pandemic. Read the full piece here or wait to discover it in your travels around our City!
