David Berry is a writer and editor who lives in Edmonton, but grew up among the tree-named streets of Sherwood Park and the trees of Ardrossan. He has worked as a critic, feature writer and essayist for the National Post, the Globe and Mail, the Walrus, CBC, Hazlitt and many others. He's the author of two books of non-fiction:On Nostalgia (2020), and How Artists Make Money and How Money Makes Artists (2025). He's very excited to have yet another excuse to be at the library.
- As Regional Writer in Residence, David will split his time between Strathcona County and St. Albert:
- January–May: Strathcona County Library
- June: Strathcona County and St. Albert Public Library
(shared programming and one-on-one consultations) - August–December: St. Albert Public Library
Email David Berry for information about WIR office hours at Strathcona County Library and, in the fall, St. Albert Public Library, and to book one-on-one writing consultations. Check for Writer in Residence programs and events at Strathcona County Library and at St. Albert Public Library.
You can find recent posts and events from the Writer-In-Residence program on our Facebook page.
The Writer in Residence (WIR) program provides an opportunity to connect with a published author. The Writer in Residence:
- Provides support to aspiring and established writers through one-on-one consultations, workshops, and mentorship,
- Connects with community groups and organizations to do outreach,
- Connects with and encourages the imagination of readers through public programming, and
- Acts as a living link between the Library and the community.
The Library provides time, space, and resources for the Writer in Residence to grow their body of work.
The Writer in Residence program is a joint project, shared by three libraries in the Metro Edmonton area:
- Strathcona County Library
- St. Albert Public Library
- Edmonton Public Library
